MINEDUC launches construction of 22,505 classrooms, 31,932 latrines across the country


On Saturday June 22, 2020, the management of Workforce Development Authority (WDA) partnered with Ruhango district at Kageyo Primary School in the activity of ministry of education of launching the construction of 22,505 classrooms and 31,932 latrines in order to reduce overcrowding and long distance in both primary and secondary schools across the country.

The program is in line with target to improve access to quality education.

The classrooms are intended to be completed in September ahead of the reopening of schools.

Prime Minister Dr.Edouard Ngirente launched the 2020 school construction program at Kabirizi Primary School in Tabagwe Sector of Nyagatare district.

Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, the minister of education launched the construction of classrooms in Nyanza district.

The total budget for schools construction is Rwf218 billion.

Out Of the targeted classrooms, Rwf10 billion will be spent on building TVET classrooms and it is planned to upgrade 81 General Education schools (9YBE & 12YBE) to accommodate also TVET Students.

World Bank financed the project Rwanda Quality Basic Education for Human Capital Development.

End of last year 2019, the Government of Rwanda and the World Bank signed a $200 million financing agreement to improve teacher competency and student retention and learning in basic education (pre-primary through secondary school) in Rwanda in order to address the issue of overcrowding in Rwandan schools.
